ABSTRACT

This action research is about using M.I.N.T.S in a song to improve capitalisation in writing among Year 5 pupils. This research aims to find ways to help Year 5 pupils to improve their capitalisation in their writing. It also aims to examine the effectiveness of using M.I.N.T.S song in improving capitalisation among the pupils in their writing. This research was conducted in a sub-urban school located in Tuaran, Sabah.  The research participants consisted of five Year 5 pupils who were weak in capitalisation in their writing. Interventions were carried out over a period of four weeks. The model used for this action research was Mcniff and Whitehead’s Action Research Cycle (2011). This research was conducted in one cycle. The data was collected from observation checklist on pupils’ behaviour during the intervention, semi-structured interview the pupils’ perception on M.I.N.T.S song and worksheets to find out on pupils’ improvement. The data was analysed qualitatively using thematic coding to answer the two research questions which are “How can I help the Year 5 pupils in improving capitalisation in their writing?’ and “How can using M.I.N.T.S in a song help the Year 5 pupils in improving capitalisation in their writing?”. The findings positively answered the research questions that is using M.I.N.T.S had helped the pupils to improve the capitalisation in their writing and also enhanced their motivation to learn the rules of capitalisation. Further suggestions for this research are actions can be added into the M.I.N.T.S song and the lyrics of the song can be shortened.
