ABSTRACT

This action research is on the use of AAQ Chant to improve the usage of interrogative pronouns among year five pupils with average level of proficiency. The research was implemented for sixteen weeks in a sub-urban school in Tuaran, Sabah. The research objectives are to explore a teaching strategy that can improve the usage of interrogative pronouns among year five pupils with average level of proficiency and the benefits of using AAQ Chant in improving the usage of interrogative pronouns among the said year five pupils. The research participants consisted of 6 pupils from a year five class. I adopted Whitehead and McNiff’s Action Research Model (2011) which consists of five disciplined and systematic stages, namely observe, reflect, act, evaluate and modify. Data was collected through interview, reflective journals, research participants’ works and observational checklist and these were analysed using tabulation, transcription and thematic coding for the purpose of triangulation. My findings revealed that the implementation of AAQ Chant did help the year five pupils to improve their usage of interrogative pronouns. The findings also showed that there are several benefits that contribute to the success of the study, including the use of animated AAQ Chant presentation, colourful visuals, infusion of fun elements, and promotion of authentic language as well as the presence of various teaching approaches. Further research could look into the usage of natural spoken language in lyrics adaptation and the flexibility to implement AAQ Chant intervention among the primary school pupils of all age groups.
